After several years of waiting, Kochi Smartcity is slowly progressing. One of the latest developments is, signing up with GEMS Education to start a school in the campus. The school will offer classes from Kindergarten to Class XII.

According to an agreement signed between Tecom, the promoters of Smartcity and GEMS Education, an international education foundation, the school will offer international quality of education by learning through practice and experiments. The agreement was signed on 25 Nov 2013 at an event in Dubai. The agreement was signed on behalf of Tecom and GEMS Education by founder chairman of GEMS Education, Sunny Varkey, and vice chairman of SmartCity Kochi, Abdullatif AlMulla.

Construction of the school is expected to start in April and the admissions will start in appropriate time for the 2015 academic year. More details of the admission process are not available yet. It is not known which syllabus will be followed by the upcoming school. Either IGCSE (international curriculum) or CBSE syllabus are expected to follow, but not confirmed yet.

Smartcity is expected to be a township project with strong importance for IT related services. The township will have all the required social and living infrastructure for the thousands of future employees in the campus itself. The upcoming school by GEMS Education is the only such program signed by Tecom till date. Other expected infrastructure include hospital, apartments, shopping malls etc, all within the campus.

Admissions to the school in Smartcity

GEMS Education has been operating high standard schools in more than 150 countries. More than educational professionals are working in the world wide campuses.

The upcoming school in the Smartcity will have a built-up area of around 2,50,000 sqft. The first batch will start in 2015 but the construction and infrastructure will be completed only in 3 phases, which will go beyond the admission to the first batch. When admissions are completed for all the classes, around 3,000 students are expected to be in the campus. Though preference will be given to the children of the professionals working in Smartcity, students from outside Smartcity also will be admitted, subject to the admission criteria set by the management from time to time.
