It has happened few times in the past, but here it is once again! Kochi Smartcity project construction work was restarted today.

Chief Minister Mr. Oommen Chandy inaugurated the Smartcity phase 1 construction work today (8 Oct 2011) at the proposed site for Kochi Smartcity.

The foundation stone for this mega IT project was laid 4 years ago, but there were no progress due to various reasons. Even though previous chief minister Mr. V. S. Achuthanthan took interest to make this project a reality during his term, there was not much progress in the construction.

Smartcity is expected to generate 90,000 jobs in 10 years. But a lot of valuable time has been lost since the talks to setup Smartcity started about 6 years ago. After a lot of discussions, negotiations and war of words between stategovernment and TECOM, the stage has been set for fast development of the Smartcity.

The first phase is expected to be completed within 2 years. Around 3000 jobs are expected to be generated after completion of this phase. At the ceremony, the CM expressed his hope that this project will help the economy of the state.

Minister for IT & Industries, Shri P K Kunhalikutty said he was very happy to be present in this ceremony since this project was originally initiated by him in year 2004. He added that notification granting SEZ status for the entire 246 acres of project land would be issued soon. The application for SEZ status which was submitted on September 19, 2011 has been cleared by the Central SEZ Board of Approval. The approval notification is expected soon.
