Venue for Kochi IPL
Jawahar Lal Nehru International Stadium in Kaloor is located in Kaloor, in Eranakulam district of Kerala. The stadium was constructed in 1996 under Greater Cochin Development Authority. The same authority is operating the stadium now. The stadium is now going to be the venue of IPL in Kochi. It was decided that the home matches of Kochi IPL team will be conducted here till the construction of a new stadium in Edakochi will be completed. The Kerala Cricket association (KCA) has got the permission to conduct the matches there. The stadium was once expected to be the home venue of Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore apart from their home grounds in Chennai and Bangalore. The stadium is now preparing for the next IPL as well as the recent One day international Cricket on 17th October 2010, between India and Australia.
The stadium has a capacity of about 60000 spectators, but now the stadium is under modification so that it can accommodate large crowds. The seats are being made bucket seats and a roof is also going to construct. The problem regarding lights in the day- night cricket matches is going to be solved by constructing new light posts etc. The Cricket association of Jawahar Lal Nehru International Stadium is also giving more care to the pitch which suits for batting and to have a flow of runs here.
