Located on the Southwest corner of India and cradled in the Western Ghats is the beautiful state of Kerala; a palm-fringed paradise (38,863 sq.kms.) with dazzling silver beaches, green fields, thatched villages and still backwaters. The landscape is dominated by rice fields, mango and cashew-nut tress and coconut palms. Kerala has been sheltered by the Western Ghats which are made up of dense tropical forest, extensive ridges and ravines and thus kept away mainland invaders. But welcomed maritime contact and trading with the outside world.
Kerala’s history is closely linked with its commerce which was wholly dependent in the olden days on its spice trade. Kerala was celebrated as the Malabar Coast, known for its spices, and travellers from around the world journeyed here to trade and to gain control over this rich land. Sea trade started with the Phoenicians, and in 1000 BC Kerala was visited by King Solomon’s ships that travelled to `Ophir’, in all probability Puvar, south of Trivandrum. Then followed the Greeks, the Romans, the Arabs and the Chinese. Latter-day traders included the Portuguese, the Dutch, the French and the British. Almost all of them have left their imprint on this land: architecture, cuisine, literature.
Pepper still remains the king of Kerala’s spices, but the state also has a very rich produce of cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, mace, ginger and turmeric; it has a rich cultivation of cashewnuts, and is India’s home state for coconut! As in the past, the state continues to be the spice capital of the world. Even in these modern times, slow-boats still coast along backwaters, the people still dress elegantly in white, and festivals are celebrated over many days with traditional gaiety.
The official language of the state is Malayalam, but English is widely spoken and understood. It is not only Hindus but Jews and Syrian Christians that make up the colourful mosaic of this land. The arrival of St. Thomas the Apostle in Kerala in 52 AD confirms to the strong Christian influence in this region. All these faiths exist in complete harmony among its 25 million people and the temples, churches and synagogues form the cohesive warp and weft that has gone into making the fabric of Kerala. There is so much that is unique in Kerala that the only way to experience its rich atmosphere, its history and culture is through travelling in the state and discovering a new facet every day. There are Kathakali performances to watch, a dance-drama based on the ancient epics; Kalaripayattu, a display of martial arts which originated in the temples of Kerala and marks the most ancient form of defence in the world and the Ayurvedic massages, in which herbs and oils are used to rejuvenate body and skin.
South Kerala with Cochin, Periyar , Kumarakom , Trivandrum, is more widely known and visited.
