Sri Shankara Temple, Kalady

Sri Shankara Temple is dedicated to Sri Adi Shankaracharya and is located at Kalady his birth place.

Shankara Temple, Kalady
Kalady is a small village located east of the Periyar river in the district of Ernakulam and is the birth place of the well known philosopher and spiritualist Sri Adi Shankara. This is one of the most popular destinations of Kerala which the tourists and pilgrims choose.

Adi Shankara was born in Kalady and his parents were Sivaguru and Aryamba, who were a Namboodiri couple.Shankaraa's Temple is located in Kalady and is run by the Sringeri Mutt. The Temple is a large and open structure on the northern bank of the Periyar river.There are two major shrines in the temple where in one is dedicated to Sri Sankaracharya and the other shrine to Goddess Saradamba, who is the main deity of Sringeri. Aryamba's Samadhi, the tomb of Araya Devi , Snakaracharya's mother, is also located there in the premises. Lord Ganapati has a shrine there , a small one, where in the evening prayers are chanted to the rhythmic ringing of the instrument cymbals. The Pooja rituals are done by Tamil or kannada Smartha Brahmins and not by Namboodiris of Kerala.

How to Reach Kalady
Kochi International airport is the nearest airport. You can hire taxis from there to reach Kalady.
Angamaly railway station is the closest railhead and you can get autos and taxis to go to Kalady.
Transport buses are available Public / private to go Kalady as the place is well connected by roads.
