    Vallarpadam Church

    Church of Our Lady of Ransom at Vallarpadam is located near Bolghatty Island and is known for the miracle powers which the main picture of Mary and infant Jesus provided to the devotees who visit.


    Vallarpadam is situated near Bolghatty Island on the west side of Kochi and is about 1 kilometer away from the mainland. Vallarpadam is linked to the mainland by the newly constructed Goshree Bridges. Vallarpadam is about 3.5 kilometers long in the north to south direction and has a population of about 10000 people.

    The magnificient picture of Mary and the Infant Jesus installed at the top of the main altar was brought from Portugal by the merchants who came with Vasco Da Gama in 1524. This church is also known as the church of the Holy spirit. This church got destroyed in the 1676 floods and the picture of Mary and Infant Jesus was seen floating in the backwaters which only Paliath Raman Valiachan the prime minister of the Kochi Maharaja could retrieve.
    The present church is built on the land donated by the Paliath Raman Valiachan, and he is remembered for his generosity by lighting the Sanctuary lamp which was also donated by him. This lamp has been burning day and night from 1676 onwards till the present.
    Vallarpadam church was declared a special church by Pope Leo XIII in 1888 and in 1951 the Indian Union Government declared the Vallarpadam Church as a major National Pilgrim centre. vallarpadathu amma is supposed to have miracle powers and is said to have saved them from many storms.

    The Feast of Vallarpadathamma is celebrated from 16th to 24th of September every year. Devotees and Pilgrims, in thousands, come to Vallarpadam to participate in the Feast, especially on 24 September.
