Ambalapuzha Sree Krishnan Temple is situated in the Alappuzha district of Kerala and is about 65 kilometers by road from Kochi.
Chembakasserry Pooradam Thirunal also known as Devanarayanan Thampuran the ruler of the area in those times built the temple in the year 790BC. There is a legend saying that this Ambalapuzha temple is associated with Guruvayoor Sri Krishnan temple. When Tipu Sultan raided Guruvayoor and the roundabout areas in the year 1798, the Idol of Lord Krishna was brought to the Ambalapuzha temple and installed there for safe keepingtill the problem got solved at Guruvayoor.
Amabalapuzha Pal Payasam is the Naivedyam here and is very well known through out Kerala and other places. There is a legend connected with the Paal Payasam and how Paal Payasam became the naivedyam of the Ambalapuzha Sri Krishnan Temple.
Velakali is a group dance performed in the open air theatre as a feat in front of the King of Ambalapuzha, while taking the deity out in a procession to the courtyard of the temple on a caparisoned Elephant. This dance recital is for the king to see how his soldiers had performed in the wars. First the feats are performed in front of the king and then it is performed in front of the Deity known as " Thirumunpil". Nowadays the Velakali is performed only inside the Temple when the Ulsavam or the festival days starts in March - April.
