Sam Koder, emigrated to Kochi from Iraq and ran the Cochin Electric Companywhich was later given off to the government. After that they had a chain of departmental stores across Kochi and stocked everything from molasses to pins.
The Koders could be relied on to stock luxury goods such as alcoholic beverages from the UK, fine clothes, and chandeliers from Europe and were treated like royalty itself. The Dutch Ambassadors were often seen there as Samuel Koder was the honorary consul to the Netherlands. Sam was the founder of the Freemasons’ organization in Cochin.
The house was then known for its famous Friday Open houses and it was a big event in the Cochin Social Calender of those days. The event became the focal point of the Raj literati, glitterati or for any one who wished to meet the Koders and get to know about Indian Jewish lifestyle. Ambassadors, celebrities or heads of state were the guests at the house in those days and the food served there was the order of the day.
