Ameda Temple is said to have been consecrated by Sage Parasurama, sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu. The lamp originally lit by Sage Parasurama is still burning in the Sree Kovil.

After retrieving Kerala from the sea with the help of his axe, he went about consecrating temples in different parts of Kerala.

One such temple is this Ameda temple, gracefully located on the banks of Vembanad Lake, in the Tripunithura -Vaikom route about 20 kms south of Ernakulam, where in he had consecrated Sapthamathrukkal, namely Veerabhadran, Ganapathy, Brahmani, Maheshwari, Kowmari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Indrani and Chamundi.

The shrines dedicated to Nagaraja and Nagayakshi are located North West and North East and the shrine of Lord Vishnu is at the north.
You can find in the premises, about 10 acres of land, are bestowed with plenty of trees and scented flowers.

There are images of snakes in the sands, various types of fish and tortoise in the ponds and lakesadd to the feeling of sacred ambience of the area. You can hear the chanting of the Rig, Yajur and Sama vedas from the Sree kovil and Naga ganangal/ Snake songs, from a single stringed instrument takes you to an upper level of spirituality.
