Sringeri Mutt in Kalady was established by Adi Sankaracharya. He is one of the well known philosopher who lived in the first millennium AD, who derived the famous advaitha philosophy.
Sringeri Mutt in Kaladi is one of the four Mutt's Adi Sankaracharya established in India. They are Dwaraka in the west, Puri in the east, Badrinath in the north and Kalady in the south.
The Sankara temple, Ramakrishna Advaitha Ashram and the Adi Sankara Keerthi Sthamba Mandapam are the main attractions here. The Sringeri Mutt is situated on the northern bank of the river Periyar which was also known as 'Purna' in the ancient scriptures, is a large, partly open structure.
There are two shrines in this temple, one is dedicated to Sankara and the other to Goddess Saradamba who is the main deity of the temple. The complex also has another small shrine which is dedicated to Lord Ganapathy.
Traditional rituals in this temple are done by either Tamil or Kannada Smartha Brahmins and not by Kerala Brahmins as is usual.
