Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, also known as the Thattekad Sanctuary, is located in the Kothamangalam Taluk of Ernakulam district on the northern bank of the Periyar river, at about 58 kilometers from the city of Kochi.
The sanctuary is Kerala's first officially recognized bird sanctuary.
Salim Ali Bird sanctuary, is comparable only to the Eastern Himalayas ones, in terms of the natural Birds habitat. Dr. Salim Ali had recommended this area in the 1930’s. This Sanctuary seems to have been a rubber plantation in the earlier days and because of its specialty wildlife, was declared a Bird sanctuary on August 27, 1983.
Some of the rare species of birds are Malabar found in the sanctuary are grey hornbill, crested serpent eagle, crimson throated barber, peninsular bay owl, rose billed roller, fairy bluebird, great Indian hornbill and there are many more to captivate the interest in you. Bhoothathankettu Dam is located on either side of the Thattekkad Bird sanctuary and the entrance is just after the Thattekkad bridge.
Vehicles are not allowed and exploring the forests with a guide will be the best option.The animal rehabilitation centre and the Taxidermic Museum are great attractions of the area. The timings of the Bird Sanctuary are from 8 am to 6 pm.
