Jawaharlal Stadium in Kochi is more popularly known as the Kaloor stadium by the locals. This is an international stadium built in the year 1996, during the tenure of K. Karunakaran as Chief Minister of Kerala., has a capacity of 60,000 people.
This was mainly constructed as a venue for the foot ball games for which Kerala is known for. Nowadays Cricket matches are also played at the stadium which is very extensive.
Not only Football and Cricket matches, important exhibitions, cinema events and political rallies are also held in these grounds from time to time.
There are 4 beautiful lighting towers with flood lights,in the ground, which can make the night look like a day. The floodlights 2 kW Floodlights at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, when switched on fully can provide Lighting levels for HDTV telecast.
The day and night cricket matches are a major hit in the city. The India - Pakistan ODI match held in 2005 was the super money grosser, while the highest attendence of 1 lakh people was for the India - Iraq Foot ball match held here.
