Chinese Fishing nets or Cheenavala in Malayalam are found in the Fort Kochi area of the Ernakulam District of the state of Kerala in India. These nets have become a very interesting tourist attraction of Fort Kochi
These Chinese Fishing nets are land installations, fixed for an unusual form of shore fishing. These nets are about 20 m wide and 10 m high. Huge mechanical contrivances hold out horizontal netsand comprises a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end. This type of shore fishing structure is operated by a team of 6 fishermen.
The weight of the man walking over the beam is enough to send the net below the waters. After a few minutes the net id lifted up and a moderate catch of fish and the crustaceans are got which get sold out within a few minutes. You can buy the catch and walk a short distance to get that cooked for you.
These Chinese fishing nets seems to have been introduced by the Chinese explorer, Zheng He. When you take a stroll by the Vasco-da-gama Square near the Fort Cochin, you can see many such nets, suspended in mid-air along the sea shore.
