Mangalavanam Bird sanctuary which belongs to the Mangalavanam Eco Tourism Forests, is in the green belt area, located right in the heart of the city of Kochi behind the Hon. High court building.
Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary is located adjoining the Arabian sea and the backwaters. This is well known as a Bird Sanctuary and a roosting place for numerous species of birds, both resident and migratory.
There were 194 birds belonging to 32 species and the total number of bird species counted and recorded so far from the area is 72 as per a study conducted in 2006.
Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary is not only a sanctuary for birds it supports many varieties of mangroves and Butterflies too. In another studyconducted at the same time , it was found that 17 species of butterflies and 51 species of spiders belonging to 40 Genus and 16 families in Mangalavanam Sanctuary
