Dutch Palace, also called as Mattancherry Palace is located at Palace Road, 10 km from Kochi City of the Ernakulam District of India.
The Palace was built by the Portuguese and was presented by them to then Rajah Of Cochin Veera Kerala Varma.
The Rajahs who came later renovated the palace and gave the palace a Hindu look and made it a testimony of Hindu temple art.
The Palace is a two storeyed building constructed around a central courtyard of the typical Kerala Nalukettu style. The arch shaped entrance, the suite of public rooms, rounded doors and windows and the masonry walls of the Dutch palace give the palace an European Look.
There is a temple in the court yard, dedicated to Pazhayannur Bhagavathyand two more at either side of the palace dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Krishna.
There are mural paintings, exhibiting some of the epic scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharata. These are found in the bed chambers and covers for almost an area of 1000 sq ft. and the interior wooden panels of Dutch Palace depict the weapons, headdresses, robes and palanquins used by the Rajas of Kochi.
